Classes

Hello! How are all of you? I am well... I little home sick and such, but well. Where did I leave off??? Oh! Sunday! Sunday Gabi and I went and wandered around for about 5 hours. It was mostly places I had been, but it was good nonetheless.

Me... By the little mermaid, of course!

Better version of the fountain telling the story of how Denmark was made.

A tower on some church. Usually you can go up there, but its closed until April! :(

More Nyhavn! Its always so nice there :)

A canal in Christianshavn. It was designed by the royal city planner and is the only part of Copenhagen with grid streets. Also, it was designed to look like Amsterdam.

Rosenberg Slot/Castle. Where the crown jewels are! And where soldiers had to chase us away because we didn't understand that we couldn't go there that way...

Kings Garden's! The correct way to get to the castle.

Nice little statue in King's Gardens. Its a very popular picnic destination.

Nifty little fountain. Its a kid fighting with a swan. It probably has some greater significance though. Its in the King's Gardens too!

This picture is just to show how close the little mermaid is to the land. You can crawl over there and all sorts of things. Which is why she's always vandalized...

Anyway, that was fun :) And then I went back and crashed. And did some reading (I think. I don't really remember?) Monday I had class. An 8:30 class. Wooo! It was interesting... I got there and realized I somehow missed that I had two reading assignments instead of just the one I did... Whoops. I did okay though, we're just defining culture at this point... Which is a lot harder than it sounds... But I've read up on it for other classes. After that I read for a bit before I met the rest of my Language, Society and Ideology class. The program assistant, Amberle, was going to take us over for the first day, since its and University of Copenhagen- Amager. So we get there, 20 minutes late. The professor just kind of sighs and the danish students (theres 3 of them) look annoyed. Then the professor goes through, "So. You have these 4 books right?" and were like... "No... we've never seen that one..." And he sighs and thinks we're dumb but its not our fault because DIS GIVES us our books. Then he says, "But you have your syllabus?" And we're like, "No...?" and he sighs again, still looking decently annoyed, and says "well... then you probably didn't hear about the homework." Which they all had... I just somehow missed that message? But it was okay. We just listened to the lecture and it was all good. Half the class was from Gettysburg College, by the way... It sounds like a good class, the professor knows what he's talking about and can bring it down to a level we all understand... Whats kind of... intimidating though is the fact there is a danish student who has already graduated with his masters in Linguistics?! Oh man.

Anyway, after class I decided to go sit outside and do more reading while eating my lunch. The Amager Campus is BEAUTIFUL with tables and chairs everywhere. Its right on the water, with canals all over the place. So I sad down and got everything out, including my brand new green, metal water bottle filled with water. Its kinda windy, so I set the water bottle on the pages to hold them down. Which worked... for a couple minutes. The water bottle flew away... yeah... It was kinda windy. So I left... But couldn't find my bus??? I don't even know. So I just took the metro back (Metro does not equal s-train does not equal bus...) I made it back and did some reading before heading home for the night to do more reading (since I was, at this point, 100 pages behind on reading, before you count what I was assigned to do by next class...)

Tuesday I got up and went to school early to do some reading. Which I did. Then I went to my first class... Which was another KU class... Ethnic Conflict in Modern States... its a theory class. Sounds interesting. The professor was really nice... just... it took over an hour to explain the syllabus. And I still don't really know what we're supposed to do. Its complicated because half the students are danish, the other half are DIS students and the two have completely different requirements??? So the Danish students have twice as much reading and only one paper... where we have 2? papers and a presentation or two??? I really don't know... I think the midterm is optional. But if you do it you may or may not have to do an extra presentation? And I think you can use your midterm as part of your final... but it may or may not count towards your grade? I don't know... We had a break and a couple DIS students came up to me and we're teaming up to conqure this class... Oh man.

He ended up keeping us late, so then I ran over to my other class (Migrants, Minorities and Multiculturalism. It sounds just like my others, doesn't it? :) ) I have a number of friends in this class and its super interesting. By far my favorite. We've had it before though. Wasn't really much different. The professor paces like a mad-man though. CONSTANTLY. Its okay though, because he's nice and clear and such. Its just distracting at first.

After that, I ate my lunch, while attempting to read. (Sensing a pattern with the reading yet? I also read on the bus...) A few people I know found me, then we headed to the bakery and I got a croissant filled with chocolate. It was amazing. And only 13 dkk!!! This was followed by, of course, more reading.

The reason I stuck around was because I had a class at 4:25. My service learning seminar! I love this class too... Too bad it doesn't count towards anything! haha. We did peace-core training things and talked about defining culture and how people have different intelligences and all sorts of really interesting things. I actually enjoyed doing the readings for this class... I was just a lot. Then I ran home for dinner :)

After dinner my plan was to go swing dancing over in Vesterbro. But... no one would give me a straight answer... then I followed up with them and they said no. I was okay with going by myself... but I was really tired, so i just stayed home and read a whole bunch. I actually got more than half of it done! AND got to bed early!!!

This morning I got up early and did laundry. Super exciting. I'm still waiting for it to dry though, since I had to hang it up on the lines... After that I headed over to Town Hall Square to meet Gaby so we could head over to Chrisitiania to search for food...

Fun thing! I finished a WHOLE book on the bus today! It was due tomorrow. But then I got home and found an e-mail telling me that class was cancelled and I didn't have to read it until Monday...

Anyway. Gabi brought some friends. They were nice. Kept walking way far ahead though? Whatever. We got kinda... confused on our way there. We were never lost... we just didn't know where we were going I guess you could say. So, we ended up in Chrisitianhavn wandering around (Chrisitiania is in Christianshavn) But we got there.

Chrisitiania is really interesting. Its a semi-independent community. AkA, they -try- to be independent and Denmark won't really let them... It was founded by hippies in the 60s and is based on principles of yay freedom and love. So its illegal to steal and theres no violence allowed. Cars are also not allowed. Other than that, alls fair game. Needless to say... drugs are quite popular. Only soft drugs though? They're anti hard drugs. Because Denmark trys to control them, they don't allow a lot of pictures... particularly on Pusher Street... because, well, they sell lots of drugs there. And if you take pictures... they get busted. But you can take pictures places that aren't pusher street. Buuuut some of the residents don't like it... So I didn't take very many.

While I'm waiting for the pictures to upload to photobucket, here are some fun Chrisitiania stories! So, we had just gotten there and were waiting for someone's friend. We were just sitting at a table when this guy puts down his stuff, turns around and gets all huffy and spits on this other guy. They start screaming and we're like... "Crap... this is going to get ugly..." When a face pops out of a window above us and starts saying something in Danish, which she later says in english: "HEY! No violence here! Quit it! No Violence!" And they stopped and went their separate ways. They also break up dog fights. No violence! Uhm... We were walking around when this random guy starts talking to us (in english.) He asks us if we'd been here before and points to the building next to us and tells us that thats the marijuana club, but they only meet once a year. Then he becons us over to the plant box and points to all the pot plants they have growing (we had noticed earlier a sign telling us not to cut down the hemp because it could not be smoked... we didn't even know what plant it was...?) He said that when the cops do raids they cut it down, so it doesn't grow very fast. He also clarified that we CAN take pictures, just not on Pusher Street. Okay. Picture time!!!

Random fairy-land type... house?

I believe it translates to "Love House." They are hippies... And there are lots of bikes. Since you can't have cars in the free-town of Chrisitiania.

MANY -beautiful- murals. They have some great artists.

Murals EVERYWHERE.

The sign says, "You are now entering the EU." Since Chrisitiania isn't in the EU... According to them?

More nifty mural...

Christiania is on both sides of the river/canal. Thats a funny frog thing floating in it.

Like I said. EVERYWHERE. Its so pretty though! They use great colors :)

Some people live in former barracks.. they've made them apartments. But this is just a road with some houses. Its pretty normal... for Chrisitiania :P

Such nice graffiti they have here... :P This was also where we found cans of red bull. Which is illegal in Denmark.

So... that was today's adventures. We also had falafel there. They were tasty. :) OH! I have over 320 pictures up on Photobucket. So be sure to check that out too... But here are some random pictures I think you'd like :)

At the royal guard museum! Its made of legos.

This is Amanda! She's being silly here :P

Remember when I kept getting lost around the lake thing? I finally took a picture of it! Here it is! Its pretty :)

Pia and Amanda!

Okay, so lots of stuff goes on here, at Town Hall Square. So... people performing for money is nothing special. But... see that guy in the greenish jacket? Yeah? He was dancing. It was HILARIOUS.

I'm off to read for a bit. Enjoy the rest of your weeks! You'll probably hear from me on... Sunday. Since Thursday and friday are all classes and EARLY on Saturday morning I'm going to sweden for my bike and canoe trip :) OH! Btw: I signed up for the cooking classes. But I already have to miss the first day :( And there are only 4 days. And the first day I was going to learn how to make something using beer. Very sad :( Anyway. I'm off to read a bunch. <3!
